Inside of the paleo diet community some of the experts and active paleo dieters have different views on a few aspects of paleolithic nutrition. The basic Paleo Diet Rules are an easy foundation to follow, but what about discrepancies?
Some of the areas in question are:
Types of fruit
If you are shooting for a low glycemic index fruit can be an issue. I love fruit, but it contains lots of natural sugars. Some paleo and primal people stay away from fruit completely and others eat it regularly.
A good spectrum would be grapefruit to watermelon. Grapefruits are sour and have low amounts of sugar, while watermelons have a lot of sugar.
Butter and Dairy
It is pretty weird that we are the only other species on Earth that drinks another species milk. In general dairy products are a “no no!” Some venture into gray areas with the higher fat products like butter. Many of the experts concur that organic free range butter is ok to eat. Organic free range butter has a close balance of omega’s 3 and 6.
Cuts of Meat
Bacon!! I love bacon and many paleos boost of bacon breakfasts. Is it really healthy to eat bacon? Experts are divided. Paleo best practices is to have organic, free range, lean cut meats. Bacons out right? It really depends.
bacon is an extreme example, but often eaten by Paleolithic Nutritionist. I try to eat lean meats and occasionally have bacon, chrizo, or carnitas.
